A Common Marriage Problem, Expecting your Partner to Think and Act as You Do 

So many people let petty, trivial issues destroy their relationship. If people were all the same the world would be such a boring place and common marriage problems wouldn’t exist but given that we are all different why do so many of us expect that our partners should think and act the same way that we do just because we have a ring on our finger!

Brian for example has just come back into the office after having an argument about his honeymoon with his wife to be. The security of his job is currently in some doubt so he suggested that they hold off booking their honeymoon for a short while and if the news is bad at work then they should consider a cheaper alternative. His fiancée doesn’t agree and suggested that if they can’t agree on the honeymoon what else will they disagree on in the future.

Isn’t that just such a negative way of looking at things? Why does she automatically assume that they should agree on absolutely everything? That’s just one of life’s conundrums.

Do we really seek out like minded individuals as our partners? If so why the saying 'opposites attract'?

Couples just need to accept that they will not always think the same, they will not always act the same and they won't always want to do the same things. It's life and it shouldn't make any difference to the marriage. Like with most common marriage problems, differences of opinion are easily solved with a little bit of effort. So many people assume that different ideas means not compatible so lets bale out but it’s generally a lot easier and far more rewarding to put a little effort into understanding our partners and sorting things out.
